Wheatley SPI, LLC, supports volunteer veterans for charity climb of Mt. Kilimanjaro, Africa, to aid Military Assistance Project and Philadelphia Veterans Comfort House

January 8, 2014

PHILADELPHIA, PA -- (January 8, 2014) Wheatley SPI, LLC, affiliate of Philadelphia area firm Wheatley US Limited, today announced its support of a fundraising project for veterans to climb Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in Africa with an elevation of more than 19,000 ft. at the summit, almost 3.6 miles. Participants will include some partially disabled veterans. A substantial portion of the proceeds, after the expenses of the climb, will go to fund projects like Philadelphia Veterans Comfort House in Philadelphia and Military Assistance Project (MAP). Participants will pay for their own airfare. Philadelphia-based MAP is the organizer of the effort. Wheatley SPI, LLC, is a company specializing in security, protection and intelligence services, products and technology.

"Those who serve in our military forces and their families make huge contributions to our nation and society, but make great sacrifices in order to do so," said William A. Wheatley, a Navy veteran and Managing Director of Wheatley SPI, LLC. "This, unfortunately, generates a unique set of financial and legal issues with which they must deal. We feel that climbing the fourth largest mountain in the world will greater demonstrate the capabilities of our military personnel and what they are willing to do for each other. At the same time, it will build public awareness of MAP, which works to address the financial and legal issues faced by veterans and their families."

Wheatley SPI, LLC, will sponsor Andre C. McCoy to participate in the climb, which will take place in December 2014. McCoy, a US Army Major and a veteran of Iraq and Afghanistan, is a partner in Wheatley SPI, LLC, and serves as the company's Director for Africa.

"As time goes on, we will seek to increase this goal and to add to MAP's fundraising efforts," said Andre McCoy. "If we can help MAP to send a large team to the tallest mountain in Africa, we will be demonstrating our support for veterans."

The Military Assistance Project was established originally to provide legal services for US Veterans who needed to declare bankruptcy. The program creates partnerships between Military personnel, pro bono Attorneys, and the philanthropic Partners in Development who provide funding for the organization. MAP offers financial services via legal representation and connection to community education resources, providing wrap-around service for those in need of financial assistance. Veterans Comfort House's mission is simple: to give homeless veterans a chance to start over and become productive members of society. This is done by using military tools to achieve the civilian goals of finding a job and securing permanent housing. The program gives homeless veterans the cultural capital to do that and reinvigorates the work ethic and discipline they had while serving our nation. See for more information.
